So yesterday I put the winter steels away and threw on the alloys. As I normally do I rotated them from the position I took them off last year, everything went as it should I and was off down the road. The only issue is when I went for a test spin they were RIDICULOUSLY loud, this set of rubber has always been loud, but it seemed way out of proportion over last year. Since it seemed that most of the noise was coming from the drivers side I brought the car back in and swapped the left side back around, took it for a drive and although it is still noisy, it is definitely not as bad. Now my question is, is it alright to have one side rotated tires and the other side not? Thoughts?

Maybe they need to be rebalanced? Did a wheel weight fall off?

Just look at the wear. If they're all worn comparably, you should be fine. You'd be more likely to get way with this if you have maintainted frequent and even rotations, ensuring similar wear across all 4 tires. If you don't notice a pull or vibration, you're probably fine. Either way, get em balanced and whatnot.

I usually go 7500 between rotations, and I can't remember what they are...basically the stock rubber from when I got the car...At this point I have both rears in front and it is louder then I would want but its working...I may switch them back to the rear and just burn the set up this summer.

They are probably the Continental ContiProContacts, most standard on GTI's with 17" wheels, and Rabbits. Not rated the best tire on Tirerack, but I actually like them, pretty good grip for OEM equipment. Danielle has them on her Rabbit, and they are quiet. Noticing things like tire noise, a sure sign you're getting old....

I do concur...oh, and I can roll the windows down a little while on the highway...the wind noise kills everything!
